LITTLE FALLS - The Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum has announced plans for its new facility outside Camp Ripley in Little Falls, slated to open in the spring of 2025.

More than 100 people gathered at a "mission brief" event Sept. 14 at the 34th Infantry Division headquarters in Arden Hills to hear about the $33 million project, which includes a 40,000-square-foot facility on 32 acres. According to the release, it will be located just outside of Camp Ripley to provide easy access to the public.

The event program featured guest author Elliott Ackerman, as well as comments from retired Maj. Gen. Rick Nash, Vietnam Veteran Bill Strosinski, and Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Herk.

"This event was a special way to bring together our supporters, legislators, donors and volunteers in one place," Randall Dietrich, executive director of the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum, said in a statement. We anticipate providing this format annually to keep our partners and the public informed of progress. It has been an honor to see Minnesotans mobilize for this project - which is focused on celebrating and remembering our military history.

The current museum inside the gates of Camp Ripley has been open for 40 years and has developed a reputation among its guests and veterans that Dietrich hopes to carry over to the new facility.

Dietrich said initial planning is underway for summer 2023. The new museum will be built near freeways 371 and 115.

"Being right next to the highway, you can enter the museum without going through security and provide better access to Minnesota's military history," Dietrich said in an interview. So it's a game-changer for us and I think it will be a remarkable draw."

Although $10 million was earmarked for the project in last year's bond bill, the session ended without passage of the bond bill. In addition to working closely with lawmakers in the upcoming legislative session, the museum board is seeking $5 million from private donors. The museum has collected more than 18 million dollars so far.

"When this project is complete, all branches of service, past and present, will be honored," Dietrich said in a statement. "It also truly represents a community effort, including funding and support from federal, state, local and private funding sources."

As part of that planning process, the board and planners traveled to some of the nation's top museums, spoke with veterans in Minnesota and beyond, and ultimately hired HGA Architects to help with the design.

The museum's focus continued to be on living history and storytelling about 9/11. A special post-9/11 exhibit opened last year for the 20th anniversary of 9/11 at the state Capitol. He made several stops throughout the year, including Duluth and Mankato. The last stop of the year was the Arden Hills Mission Short Time event.

In addition to the post-9/11 exhibit, there are a number of important artifacts that Dietrich and the museum's board of directors see as critical to building a world-class museum.

Earlier this month, the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum welcomed back a sail and rudder from the famous USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul was a nuclear submarine in service between 1984 and 2008. It was the first US Navy ship to be named after a Twin Cities area.

Known by the hull classification SSN-708, this submarine served in Operation Desert Shield and the First Persian Gulf War. It was the first submarine to carry Tomahawk missiles specifically intended for use in attacks on Iraq.

"This project is a great opportunity to show our support for veterans and military personnel," Scott Anderson, executive vice president and chief executive officer of Anderson Transportation Services, said in a statement. "We are honored to be able to contribute to this incredible addition to the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum and can't wait to see it come to fruition." "Many of our drivers and employees are veterans, and this is one way we honor our service and show our appreciation."

In a letter to Navy Program Director Curtis E. "The sail and rudder will be a wonderful addition to the museum and will serve as a reminder to generations of Minnesotans of the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Navy to preserve their freedom," Brown wrote.

From time to time, our newsroom reports news tagged "Staff". Often, the word "staff" is used when rewriting basic news that comes from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, that requires little or no reporting. Sometimes this name is used when a story involves multiple authors or when a story is formed by assembling previously published news from various sources. If external sources are used, this is mentioned in the story.
