The American Association of Military Colleges and Schools (AMCSUS) is a nonprofit service organization whose military curriculum is approved by the Department of Defense and maintains good standing with its regional accrediting organizations.

The AMCSUS charter states that the goals are to "advance the common interest and promote the welfare of all members; promote and maintain high academic, military, and moral standards in member schools; limit the good of member schools. The Department of Defense and the public at large; a spirit of patriotism and respect for legitimate authority." promote and promote; to develop citizens who love peace and strive to preserve it".

With the approval of the Ministry of Defence, member military schools send members of the armed forces to the school. Schools organize their student bodies into a cadet corps, and students wear uniforms and remain subject to military discipline throughout the academy or school. AMCSUS is headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia. It was a 99-year change that removed cadets from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) and established the school as a separate military academy with a new curriculum, rewriting the school's credo and even a new uniform patch. When the change takes effect in the fall, the Army's equipment and annual funding will disappear.

"For our school, we take our heritage and history very seriously," said Matthew Moss, principal of Mendota Heights Catholic Boys School. "So to choose to lose or leave our almost century-old relationship, that's a big deal."

School administrators said they decided to sever ties with the Army for several reasons: The Army soon announced that St. They expected the Thomas JROTC program to be canceled, wanted more autonomy, and believed the curriculum had changed.

But many school administrators and alumni said they were excited for the school to create its own leadership program and have more flexibility, even though the school would lose $156,000 a year in government funding by ending its relationship with the Army.

"I think a lot of it comes from our desire to be in control of our own destiny," Moss said.

There are some concerns. The school has received calls from former students who fear it will completely remove the military focus.

"I was a little scared at first. I wasn't really sure what this meant for St. Thomas," said Steve Norton, a 1996 graduate and president of the alumni association committee. "[JROTC] is definitely an important aspect of the school."

But when alumni heard the military element would be retained, "their eyes would be opened and they would join," said Mike DePuglio, the school's commandant of cadets.

"In short, over the years, the Army JROTC curriculum and model has evolved into a program that de-emphasizes traditional military subjects and has redesigned its model to teach structure...work skills and life stability to target teenagers," DePuglio said.

The military denies that JROTC is a "closed list" and says schools are removed if enrollment drops or schools fail to meet standards, said Mike Johnson, a spokesman for the Army Cadet Command, which runs JROTC. He also questioned Santo Tomas' description of the JROTC curriculum: "We believe that the curriculum is always focused on practice and life skills, which is the main goal."

More than 1,700 schools across the country have JROTC programs, most of which are after-school. But Santo Tomas will not be the first independent military school.

The Association of American Military Schools has 28 college-preparatory high school members. Of these, 8 are independent and 20 are affiliated with the JROTC. The discipline is there, even without a formal military relationship, said Ray Rottman, the association's executive director.

"We're not trying to teach you to keep your legs straight," he said. "We're pushing it ... so when they're in the classroom, the same discipline and structure makes sense and they can focus."

John Buxton, principal of Culver Academies, an all-boys military school in Indiana that has been independent of JROTC since 1988, said "the Old Guard gets a little upset" when a school cuts ties with the military. But, he added, "San Tomas will benefit greatly from this decision."

St. Thomas administrators say there won't be much change in the day-to-day lives of students. Core subjects such as maths and English will remain the same. Principal Moss said the school had raised funds and paid off debts, so tuition fees would not increase due to the loss of funds.

The most significant change will be the military classes that will be held three times a week. About 70 percent of the classes will be new, including leadership, military history and geography. The school will continue to cover topics such as gun law, civic responsibility and first aid.

St. Thomas wants to keep other traditions intact, such as marches, reviews and annual inspections to assess cadet appearance, training skills and knowledge. Students still form a school-wide morning assembly where they greet each other and principals read speeches.

Cadets will wear the same uniform, light blue button-down shirts, black ties and shiny shoes. The JROTC patch will be removed from a sleeve and the St. Thomas badge will be sewn on.

Senior Connor Duffy said he and other seniors created a new school credo to replace JROTC. It is an opportunity to build a new tradition.

"Having had a lot of fun ... working with my seniors to make the transition to next year's senior class," Duffy said. "I think it will be very rewarding to come back in 25 years and stand in class and hear students talk about the credo that I helped design."
